Beaver Creek eNews 3/8/2020

Dear Neighbors
 
Last month was a little more interesting than most of us would like. Good news on February 20. The P&Z Commission voted NO to PPE which was a stress reliever to have that concluded for now. The day before, the Beaver Creek Golf Course & Ranch House fell out of escrow without completing purchase. Perhaps for the 8th time? So, the property ownership remains the same for now.
Tomorrow afternoon the BCCA Board will hear a presentation about the town house lots around Lake Montezuma and go over a report from our representatives on the Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee. This committee will make a recommendation to the CCF&MD Fire Chief and Fire Board about whether to pursue a bond (property tax increase) to potentially add additional fire stations and equipment. Their next meeting is at 5 PM Monday evening in the Camp Verde Library. The public may attend.
On Friday, the Beaver Creek Preservation & Historical Society’s annual meeting is at the Rock School and will dedicate the new windows. Robert Estrada will give an update on his research about Lulu, an Apache Indian girl in the 1800’s. That afternoon in the BC Library is an opportunity to get Narcan training. There have been 3 overdoses in Rimrock since October, one was a youth. If you think that you might need to have this knowledge and treatment at hand, please read the flyer below and RSVP. Like CPR, you never know when this skill might be a lifesaver.
Later this month and in April the Census should be a priority for our area. Much funding for the school and other services is based on the collected information. Please help by responding. Also, there are still $16.50 jobs available. This paycheck will not affect any other sources of income. If interested, please call 1-800-JOB-2020 or apply online at
It’s still not too late to get Free help with your taxes at one of these sites. And a heads up about the Free Dumping this year. Appliances, tires, bagged trash, TV’s and old bicycles are accepted as usual. But slash, weed trimmings, is not accepted since the mulch pile is still smoldering from the fire.  Free dumping starts on 3/19.

Monday, 3/9-The CCF&M Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee meets at 5 PM in the Camp Verde Public Library. The purpose of the Committee: Make a recommendation to the CCFMD board to pursue or not pursue bond to fund capital improvement needs of CCFMD, e.g., additional fire stations. Friday, 3/13-The Beaver Creek Preservation & Historical Society meets at 10 AM at the Rock School on the Beaver Creek School campus for the annual meeting. A short business meeting will be held and election of Board members for 2020. One Board position is available. If interested, please contact Judy at 300-0331. Special recognition will be held for those generous donors for the new windows. Ending highlight will be Rob Estrada giving us an update on Lulu, an Apache child. Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays, 3/19 thru 4/4-FREE DUMP DAYS  at the Camp Verde Transfer Station, 2600 E. Hwy 260, 7 miles East of I-17 from 8 AM to 4 PM. District 2 Supervisor Tom Thurman and The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors, working with the Public Works Department, is pleased to announce a community cleanup in the Verde Valley.
Accepted items are: household appliances, TV’s, bagged trash, auto batteries, unmounted tires, and furniture. Items that will not be accepted: yard trimmings, loose trash, liquids, hazardous materials, cars, Ni Cad batteries, dead animals and any commercial dumping. Good Things in Beaver Creek 11/5/2019

Dear Neighbors
 
Extra POBs (pats on back) for the BC School Girls’ Volleyball Team who won the Verde Valley Region and second in state for small schools!  Wooohooo!!!  This is one of the good things happening at Beaver Creek School.
On another note it’s time to start getting ready for Christmas distributions.  Christmas Assistance Request forms are available in the front office of the school. Christmas Assistance is only available for students through the 8th grade.  High School students are not included.  These forms need to be returned NO later than November 14. ( Assistance Request Forms will not be accepted after the deadline date of November 14. Forms are handled on a first come first served basis at the front office.)
On Friday, author Julie Uli will give a special reading of her new book during the afternoon for a story time.  Saturday brings us the fine pancake breakfast which is a fundraiser that helps keep the Adult Center open and an all-day fundraiser at Montezuma Chapel which displays many items and much food for sale.  Proceeds will be used for chapel repairs.  Free food is available early Saturday morning at Beaver Creek School and free yoga is offered in the afternoon at Montezuma Well.  Saturday through Monday, Native American artists are visiting Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot to show their work.
Monday is a fee free day at all National Parks in observance of Veterans Day.  On the following Saturday, ASU geologist Steve Semken will narrate the hike to the Montezuma Well Overlook.

Saturday offers local wildflower hiking or a bird walk and a tour of Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station which includes lunch.  On Sunday afternoon, find out what Sound Journey is at Emerald Waves.  Monday offers free flu shots at the BC Adult Center and a movie there in the evening.  Also on Monday is the BC Trails Coalition meeting and Kids at Hope training at BC School in the evening.
Looking ahead, additional Trunk ‘N Treat vehicles are need for Halloween Spooktacular.  If you are available, please call Janet at 928-301-2749 and leave a message.
The BC Adult Center needs donated baked items to sell at the Arts & Crafts & Bake Sale held on November 1 & 2  from 9 AM to 3 PM both days.   If you care to contribute to the bake sale, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please contact Judy Edwards at 928-274-6023 for how to get your goodies to the Center.
On a tragic note:  This morning at 7:15 AM on Montezuma Ave the lovely baby deer, which many of us have enjoyed watching play along the road for the past several weeks, was hit and killed by a speeding black truck. The driver did not stop.  Beaver Creek Transit driver, Roz Birdsall, carried the dead fawn to the side of the road near Cayuga and called for Animal Control.  Truck driver, please seek peace in your life and look to care for the health and safely of people and animals.  RIP young fawn, you are missed and remembered.

Fire & Safety, Montezuma Well, Schools, Trails

The Yavapai County sign project is still underway, replacement of 400 mainly street and stop signs in our area. Chris from Yavapai County Public Works is hard at work below.  Contractor Earth Resources is continuing to complete chip sealing in several areas. (It is not working on Bice Rd, just was parked nearby for convenience.)
Halloween is rapidly approaching. As usual, we need volunteers to bring vehicles to Rollins park for Trunk ‘N Treat. We always have a good time on this holiday and parents and grandparents will sincerely appreciate your efforts. Please email the calendar crew or call Janet at 301-2749 if you want to participate.  Also this year there will be a Haunted House at Emerald Waves Healing.
Beaver Creek School was busy with special projects for our young students and training for the school staff which you will enjoy reading about below. At the end of the article is a final note on the U.A.C. company which was soliciting donations from area businesses. The donations are gratefully appreciated and a contract which was thought to be expired in 2011 is now officially terminated.
Looks like the Gasmart has finished repainting. The new color scheme sure changes what used to be an eyesore while driving on BC Road. Thank you to that business for making such a pleasant and unexpected change!
A buffet of fine activities awaits your choices for the next 4 days and beyond. Tomorrow is the Third Thursday evening at the businesses along Beaver Creek Rd who have something special for visitors at that time. On Friday, BCPHS has special guest speaker rancher & businessman Andy Groseta and Toddler Time is offered at the library. Saturday morning offers the bird walk at Montezuma Well and the first social hike of the season by the BC Trails Coalition. From 11 to 1 PM the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station has an open house and free food, too.   On Sunday, Sound Journey is featured at Emerald Waves Healing.
Monday brings the free flu shot clinic to the Beaver Creek Adult Center, just from 10:30 to Noon this year. If you didn’t already get one, please consider this opportunity. That evening there is Kids at Hope Training at BC School and Merry Movie Monday at the Adult Center. In between all of these are regularly scheduled meetings.

Good Things Happening in Beaver Creek School District-
September 2019!
Mr. Cody Kukulski’s second grade class went on a field trip to Red Rock State Park. They hiked and learned about bugs which tied in with their curriculum. Mrs. Cindy Ramirez and Mrs. Jordan Harris went to the Curtain Up series’ play about the American Revolution which was performed by Yavapai College students. They had a great time and learned a lot!
Mrs. Jill Agnew, Mrs. Cassie Weber, and Ms. Marla Sutcliffe Completed Kids at Hope Training Module 1. Board clerk, Mrs. Brandi Bateman, offered her time an expertise to this training. The participants are now knowledgeable in the philosophy which drives our work with kids.BC School Dist
The Sedona Literacy Center has resumed tutoring services for select 2nd and 3rd grade students. They focus exclusively on reading and promote growth through their 1:1 system of instruction.
Ms. Yolanda Sprinz has resumed K-Kids and Builders Club, two clubs for kids which are sponsored by Kiwanis. This club fosters good citizenship, strong moral character, community service, and leadership skills.
Students attended the Mindset Mission assembly. The assembly teaches kids to never give up, encourage others, and to do their best. The kids had a great time and learned some important skills too.
Ms. Ori Womack and Mrs. Lyndel Kelley attended the Arizona State Retirement System conference. They received updates to the system, legislative updates, and continued to develop their understanding of the program and its benefits so that they can continue to serve our staff at the highest level possible.
Students and staff did a great job on picture day staying organized and helping one another through the process. A special thank you to Ms. Sharon Brooks and Mrs. Micca Martinez for organizing the event, and to our parent volunteers Mrs. Crystal Turnbell and Mrs. Taylor Morales for their hard work.
Superintendent Karin Ward participated in a panel discussion on mental health and schools in Arizona. She was selected because of her long history of employing various techniques and partnerships with agencies such as Spectrum Healthcare to meet the many mental and behavioral health needs of students in our community.
We look forward to our Annual Walk to School Day October 1 on Beaver Creek Road.  Please be aware of slow traffic from 7 to 8 AM.

Beaver Creek School District has been in communication with David Comer, Customer Service Manager of the Universal Ad Company (U.A.C.). We were sent the contract from Fanfare Sports from 2009 when I signed an agreement with this company.  We received Fundraising products in 2010 and 2011.
The company’s agreement shows that the agreement is in place until it is terminated by either party. I was under the impression that Fanfare Sports was no longer in business as we had not received products since 2011. I was mistaken. The name has evidently changed to UAC.
David Comer guaranteed that he will be sending the school fundraising products that are already in production. We appreciate that and will let the community know when the products arrive. After this fundraising shipment Beaver Creek School District requests termination of the agreement.
For community businesses who donated to UCA, thank you. We appreciate your dedication to our school fundraising needs.
In the future Beaver Creek School will always let the community know when there are fundraising efforts for school projects.

Wendy is proficient with iPhones, Android devices, Chromebooks and most Windows computers. She says, “What I don’t know I can find out and I am not afraid to say, ‘let’s look that up'”.

Dear Neighbors
We are so fortunate to be looking at another week of highs in the 80’s and lows in the 50’s. Such perfect October weather!! While on the subject of good things locally, the Beaver Creek Gasmart looks much better with its new tan & rust paint job. POBs (Pats on Back) to those who made the paint change possible.
Also, on the good news front. Yavapai County has begun a month-long project to improve the safety of our signs themselves and their use for those who observe them. Jon David, Signs & Pavement Markings Project Manager for Yavapai County Public Works, reports that “Crews are out working on a project in the Lake Montezuma/ Rimrock/ Mcguireville areas. The reason for the project is to change the sign mounting post from a U-channel type post which currently exists to a square post telespar type that is mounted in a concrete base. The new base and post comply with guidelines that we must follow, and it improves response time for signs that become damaged. We are also replacing around 400 street name signs in the area that do not comply with retro reflectivity standards. These types of projects have been ongoing in Yavapai County for the past few years.” More POB’s!
And now the ugly. A resident took a drive up the road past Sedona Sky School and while hiking found that people are dumping yard debris (tree limbs etc) and construction debris (broken cement blocks etc) in two different areas off the paved road and on the dirt side roads. Please utilize your burn permits for the slash and use the Camp Verde Transfer Station (the dump) or Grey Wolf for the construction waste. If possible and safe, report dumping in the surrounding forest to the Red Rock Ranger Station and on private property to YCSO.

The sweet fall weather brings us many special events to choose from and numerous activities. Tonight is Yoga & Wine at Emerald Waves Healing on Beaver Creek Rd.  On Saturday, several of our resident artists are presenting and speaking about their works at the Camp Verde Library starting at 10:30 AM.  This is your chance to see works from Sunshower Rose, Tammie Gardner-Williams, Sharron V Porter and Bill Helm.  Also on Saturday is another Montezuma Well Bird Walk.
On Monday, the Lake Montezuma Women’s Civic Club’s featured guest is Ashton from Out of Africa.  The Beaver Creek Library is sponsoring two 3-class workshops for beginners on using Photoshop.  The first session starts on Monday.  Sign up promptly if interested.  More information is in the flyer below.  Merry Movie Nights begin at the BC Adult Center starting on Monday.
Yavapai Development Services will be present at the BC Library most of the day on Wednesday to answer questions about permits, zoning, building, etc.  More information is in the flyer below.

“Visions of the Verde” Artists Special Event

The Camp Verde Community Library and Friends of Beaver Creek Library will co-host an Art event Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in the Terra Cotta Room of the C.V. Community Library. Arizona Artists will be featured, who were juried into the Visions of the Verde exhibit, which is on display at Yavapai College, (Verde campus) art gallery until Oct. 11 closing reception.

Participating artists will speak about their creative process regarding pieces currently on display at the College.   One of the artists, Sunshower Rose, will moderate this event. Her video “Green is the River” will be one of the featured pieces. Also from the Beaver Creek area: Sharron V. Porter and Tammie Gardner-Williams. We are still seeking local artists from “Visions of the Verde”, who wish to participate. Please contact Sunshower for further information: 928.550.1088.

Dear Neighbors
Looks like our little September monsoon season may bring us some more rain chances tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday AM. Of course, there will be some gusty winds and we’ll hope to make it through without more power outages. The temperatures will mostly be below 100 for the next week. Yahoo!!!
Meetings and clubs that took a summer vacation have restarted and the yearly ones continue. Today are the BC Community Association and Beaver Creek School monthly meetings. Both have agendas posted on their web sites. Tomorrow the BC Kiwanis and MR Fire Auxiliary meet and on Wednesday we have the blood pressure clinic, Rimrock Farmers Market and Al-Anon Family Group. On Saturday is the public food bank at Beaver Creek School and next Monday the BC Trails Coalition meets.
Special events this month include a Pancake Breakfast at the BC Adult Center, a Food Handlers Workshop at Post 93 in Camp Verde, Kids at Hope training at BC School for adults interested in volunteering once a week, and Kiwanis annual Spaghetti Dinner.
Saturday the 28 th will be a busy day. Free Smart Devices help is available at the BC Adult Center, Oktoberfest is in Rollins Park across the street from the Center, and its Fee Free day in all the National Parks.
This year LMWCC, Lake Montezuma Women’s Civic Club, resumes on a new day, time, location and cost. Please note the details below. The BC Preservation & Historical Society has another fine presentation scheduled which includes seeds to take away for planting. And we forgot to get the information for the ESL class at Beaver Creek Baptist Church in the calendar, but it will be included next time and meets every Thursday at 6:30 PM.

The Rimrock Rag doll Crafters had a great second meeting with 2 new members joining us…we are up to 7 now.  Everyone shared, compared and divided up the projects.  We are now cutting fabric for dolls, dresses, shirts and britches.  Completed so far are 6 doll quilts. We even have an artist in our midst that will be painting the faces on the dolls….never fear….non-toxic paint.  We want to thank the folks who have donated….we have a good start on poly fill, but…we will need more.  We also need baskets…..wicker type….old Easter baskets would work great too.  All donations, including cash gifts, should be dropped off at the Kiwanis Clothing Closet.  And we want anyone, who would like to donate time and talent to join us.  If you can sew, flyers are up at the Clothing Closet and the Lake Montezuma post office, (green paper) so you can make plans.  Our time is a gift to the children of this community.  All donations and dolls will be given to the Christmas House.  Sam Fisk

The Christmas House Project is off and running as of an hour ago.  We have five (maybe six) ladies who will be making Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls as well as Amish Dolls for the Christmas House this year to be sold or donated at the shop.  We are just donating them.  Whatever happens after that is fine, whether the dolls are sold to raise funds for the project or given to families.
We need donations of stuffing….polyfluff, cotton or wool, leftover bags or new.  We are excited to be helping the Beaver Creek Kiwanis raise Christmas funds for families and to contribute to our community.  Flyers are up at the Kiwanis Clothes Closet and at the Lake Montezuma Post Office.  So far we have received only one bag.  We desperately need more……lots more!  Thank you in advance to all who help us

If you are willing to commit to Kids at Hope and Mentor Training (about 4 hours) and have about 30 minutes per week for the school year to commit to a student in Beaver Creek School, we would love to chat with you! Lots of Summer Events 6/11/2019

Dear Neighbors
With the arrival of mid June, the annual preparations for the Fourth of July Parade, Pancake breakfast, Celebration and Duck Race are in progress.  There is always interest in watching the parade, however we would like to see more participants in it.  Walkers are welcomed as well as motor vehicles and horses.  It’s a different experience doing the short route and doesn’t have to be anything fancy, though decorations and creativity are always appreciated.  Signing up can be done at the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station or at the Beaver Creek Adult Center.
The potential Verde Connect road and bridge project is a hot topic around here.  The Beaver Creek Community Association has heard presentations from both Connect and Disconnect.  BCCA will meet from 3 to 4 PM on Monday, 6/24, in the Beaver Creek Adult Center to finalize the association comment.  BCCA would appreciate further comments from local residents directed to contact@BeaverCreekAZ.us or at the meeting. Yavapai County is holding public meetings tonight in Cottonwood and tomorrow night in Camp Verde to present the alternatives and to take public comments.  Further information on these is below.
There have been questions about when the fog sealing will take place on Montezuma Avenue and Lake Montezuma Rd.  It has been cancelled due to the product specified with the Asphalt Paving and Supply contract would not work on these roads.  Yavapai County will reschedule treatment of these roads in the future, probably using chip seal.

Duck Race tickets are for sale at many locations through out Beaver Creek.  Good prizes as usual and the profit supports local Beaver Creek Kiwanis projects throughout the year.  The fine summer activities are continuing at our local library.  This afternoon, Ancestry.com training is featured from 1 to 3 PM.

Wednesdays, All-The Al-Anon Family Group meets every Wednesday from 6 PM to 7 PM at the Beaver Creek Baptist Church (entrance is the same as to the Rimrock Post Office). Are you troubled by someone else’s drinking? This is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problem.

Most of us have seen many a May with sparse rainfall. To have several showers and continued wildflower production is an unexpected and joyful treat for our eyes. Last Saturday’s hikers on the trail to the Well Overlook were especially rewarded with a fine flower show.

Tomorrow-Saturday morning is another good one for a hike although there is a possibility of a shower later. It’s a good day to visit the early morning food bank at Beaver Creek School, cut weeds in your yard and take the slash to the free drop off outside of Camp Verde and return to get your vehicle washed by Key Club High School students at the fire station.

It’s also a time of year to donate items. The PTO is having a raffle at the BC School Spring Concert this Thursday and needs more raffle items from businesses and the community. Information about this is in the special event section. The BC Adult Center is having a rummage sale on May 31/June 1 and is looking for donated items to be brought to the Center. And this Saturday is the Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Drive. Please fill your bag with nonperishable food items and leave it by your mailbox.  The food goes to our local food bank at BC School.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day; special appreciation and respect sent to all! Taco Tuesday has returned to the fire station. On Thursday, there is an informational speaker on wills, trusts and deeds at the Adult Center and the Spring Concert at Beaver Creek School. On Friday there is a play at the school. The following Saturday brings us the Donation Pancake Breakfast at the Adult Center and a Hopi Drum Concert at Montezuma Castle.
The Beaver Creek Community Association has mailed the Beaver Creek Business Directory to every mail recipient in zip codes 86335 and 86342. The paper copy won’t be replaced for two or three years. However, it’s not too late to get your business listed in the online directory. If you are a paid member of the association, it is a free listing. If not, then the cost is $25.  Please email Chris at contact@BeaverCreekAZ.us if interested. The online directory is at the web site at www.BeaverCreekAZ.us. The emergency information and important contact phone #’s prepared by the Beaver Creek Community Action Team are on page 8. This information is also in card form which makes it convenient for refrigerator doors and car glove compartments. The card is being distributed at meetings and several locations.

Special Events for May 11 Through May 20
 
Saturday, May 11–The Key Club Car Wash will be at the Montezuma Rimrock Fire Station from 10 AM to 1 PM. This is a Kiwanis high school teen group who do volunteer work and raise funds for charitable causes. Such a great opportunity to get your vehicle cleaned between storms and donate to good causes.
Sunday, May 12–The Grace Community Lutheran Church special service honoring mothers starts at 10:30 AM.  A dinner will follow with the men cooking and serving the women.
Tuesday, May 14–Taco Tuesday is at the Montezuma Rimrock Fires Station from 5 to 7 PM. Donations $$$ for the dinner. We are raising money to buy a Drone for the department. The fire personnel are taking classes to get certified to operate the drone. The drone will assist in Search and Rescue operations, checking out dangerous areas, etc. Come on down and enjoy a taco dinner, visit with your community and support our Fire Department!! Thank you, The Fire Auxiliary.
 
Thursday, May 16–Judge Duane Wyles, Retired Attorney at Law is the BC Adult Center’s next speaker in the BC Adult Center’s informational series starting at 9:30 AM. He will discuss WILLS, TRUSTS, AND DEEDS. Everyone is welcome, no charge. Please call 928-567-4556 for further information.
Thursday, May 16–BC School Spring Concert begins at 7 PM in the cafetorium. At our Spring Concert the PTO is hosting a raffle. We are asking for donations from businesses or creative baskets and crafts to raffle off. So far we are very grateful for the items that have been donated including gift certificates to Crickets, Magnolia Beauty Bar, Jerome Ghost Tours, Home Depot gift cards from the BC Community Assoc and an Escape Room. Saturday, May 18–A Hopi Drum Concert FREE. Montezuma Castle National Monument invites the public to an evening of music and dancing under the full moon. Ryon Polequaptewa will sing and drum while Living Traditions Dance Troupe will perform the Corn Dance and Horse Dance. Monday May 20–The Beaver Creek Trails Coalition Annual Mtg will be at 1 PM in the BC Adult Center. The program will include a Power Pt presentation, Volunteer of the Year Award, amendments to the By-Laws and election of board members. Saturday, 5/11–Free food is available at Beaver Creek School  from 7:45 to 9 AM.  Food is always available the second Saturday of each month for distribution to everyone and during the month as needed.  Emergency boxes are available by calling the school at 928-567-4631
 
Monday, 5/13–The Beaver Creek Community Association (BCCA)  meets at 3:00 PM in the BC Adult Center. Items for discussion include Yavapai County proposed zoning ordinance amendments concerning guest homes, metal panel fencing and mobile food units. Preparations will be made concerning the State Transportation Board July meeting in Cottonwood and opportunity to address our safety concerns with the TI 293 ramps at the McGuireville Interchange. Tuesday, 5/14–The  Lake Montezuma Women’s Civic Club  meets at Robbie’s in Rimrock, 11 AM to 1 PM. Lunch (soup and salad bar) is $15. We will present $1000 check to this year’s scholarship recipient, hear progress report from last year’s recipient, install new officers, vote on revisions t bylaws, discuss and vote on location/day/time for next year’s monthly meetings (Sept to May), and present the award for Woman of the Year.  This is an important business meeting and we have a full agenda so please plan to attend.  Your vote is important.  Contact Bonnie Best at 510-761-0439 for more information.

4/1 through 6/1–Yavapai County FREE Slash Drop Off  at the Camp Verde Transfer Station from 8 AM to 4 PM, Tuesdays through Saturdays.  Acceptable items are brush, branches, grass, leaves, and yard trimmings.  No lumber, stumps, roots, cactus, metal, or garbage.  Slash must be removed from plastic bags.  Located 7 miles east of I-17 on Hwy 260.  For additional information, please contact the Yavapai County Public Works Dept at 928-771-3183. The other transfer stations are open dfferent days and times.  If you use one of the others, please call first to verify days and times available for drop-off.  (See flyer below)
