Brush Fire & Lots of Info 6/3/2020

Dear Neighbors
As if there wasn’t enough going on in our country and state, Beaver Creek had a close call with a brush fire running on the east side of I-17 between MP 293 (McGuireville) and north to about MP 296. The northbound lanes were closed while fire crews defeated the flames. This could have been a tragedy for families in Beaver Creek if the fire had continued further eastward. However, earlier in the day, Jodi Rooney spoke at the State Transportation Board meeting in support of replacing our inadequate I-17 interchange and bridge in McGuireville. She is a transportation professional and a candidate for the Yavapai County District 2 Supervisor office. Her work is a follow up to the fine letter of support for this project sent to that board in April and to the presentations from the BCCA Board last year. Her words:
“You have helped us with many projects over the years and it is our intention to continue to be innovative and follow through.  We also appreciate Board Member Gary Knight representing us.
I-17, by its nature, requires multiple improvement and maintenance.  ADOT, FHWA and regional partners have always stepped up.  Our current national economic situation has required us all to sacrifice.  We are seeing this with the tentative 5-year program.  While we understand this, I speak to and ask that I-17 continue to remain a priority.  Specifically, project H68000, study roadway widening, design, construction – I-17 from Anthem Way TI to Cordes Junction (over $300 million).
I believe Supervisor Thurman sent a letter last month regarding the McGuireville TI.  I ask that you keep this on the radar.

    • On Monday, June 1, the Yavapai County Recorder’s office opened for in person services.
    • The Yavapai County Planning & Zoning Commissions and Board of Adjustments will resume meetings in September using social distancing and other safety protocols.

Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments are increasing recreational access to trails and outdoor spaces. The National Park Service (NPS) is working service wide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.
Beginning June 5 th , 2020, Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments will reopen access to:
  • Outside trails at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot
  • Picnic areas at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot
With public health in mind, the following facilities remain closed at this time:
  • Visitor Centers
  • Park Stores
  • Museums
  • Restrooms
  • Montezuma Well (Entire Unit)
Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments are also observing Stage II Fire Restrictions.    During this stage, the following is prohibited:
  • Igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including use of charcoal or briquettes.
  • The use of stoves or grills that are solely fueled by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) are allowed.
  • Operating internal combustion power tools, such as a chainsaw or other equipment, between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Generators with an approved spark arresting device in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the generator are allowed
  • Welding, or operating any acetylene or other torch with an open flame
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle.  Deposit butts in an ashtray, do not toss or discard on the road or surrounding ground.
  • The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. At The Verde Valley Monuments, our operational approach will be to examine each facility function and service provided to ensure those operations comply with current public health guidance, and will be regularly monitored. We continue to work closely with the NPS Office of Public Health using CDC guidance to ensure public and workspaces are safe and clean for visitors, employees, partners, and volunteers.
    While these areas are accessible for visitors to enjoy, a return to full operations will continue to be phased and services may be limited. When recreating, the public should follow local area health orders (, practice Leave No Trace principles, avoid crowding and avoid high-risk outdoor activities.The CDC has offered guidance to help people recreating in parks and open spaces prevent the spread of infectious diseases. We will continue to monitor all park functions to ensure that visitors adhere to CDC guidance for mitigating risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19, and take any additional steps necessary to protect public health.

    Watch out for the wind today and especially tomorrow…predicted to be up to 31 MPH today and 37 MPH on Tuesday. No fires allowed per Copper Canyon Fire & Medical restrictions.
    The Beaver Creek Library is back to their 6 day a week schedule which includes Saturdays. Service is still call ahead for curbside service. Open 10:30 AM to 6 PM Mondays through Thursdays and 9 AM to 3 PM on Friday and Saturday.
    The Lake Montezuma Women’s Civic Club wishes to thank everyone who bid on the four-basket fundraiser. $400 was contributed for the scholarship fund.
    Last Thursday was the first weekly Food Share in Beaver Creek. These will continue throughout the summer in addition to the Beaver Creek Food Bank at the Beaver Creek School the 2nd Saturday morning of each month. The Beaver Creek Kiwanis have purchased 60 whole frozen chickens for the boxes this Thursday which will again be a drive through at Beaver Creek School from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Thank you to Marlyn Van Keuren, YC District 2 Executive Assistant for making this happen, to the Salvation Army for making the delivery and to Manzanita Outreach for providing and packing the food. Volunteers at the site included Marlyn, Jodi Rooney (candidate in the upcoming District 2 election), Jessica Herrera, Roz Birdsall, Mark Holst, Bev Jackson (Cornville Community Association President), Beth Franklin (BC Librarian), and Janet Aniol.
    ****On Wednesday, May 20, Beaver Creek School’s 8th grade class will be doing a parade for their promotion. The parade will begin at BC School and follow a route that takes us down by the Lake Montezuma Village Square (see picture). The parade will begin at the school at 6 PM. Staff and Parents are hoping to get support from the community. Please come out and cheer on our 8th graders as they prepare to move on to high school. Thank you in advance for your support in making what could have been a disappointment to our students into something memorable for them.
    The Beaver Creek Community Association is working on a questionnaire for the six candidates for the office of Yavapai County District 2 Supervisor in order to give voters more information. If you would like to make a recommendation for a question, please email the calendar crew. The BCCA board meets today, further information is below.
    Since all six of the above candidates are Republicans, the new supervisor will be elected in the Primary election on August 4. Information for registered Independents is below.

    Yes! Arizona has an open primary law which allows any voter who is registered as independent to cast a ballot for one of the officially recognized political parties in State Primary Elections. Independent voters on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) will receive a postcard in the mail asking them to choose which party ballot they wish to receive for the Primary Election. The corresponding primary ballot will then be sent by mail to the voter to complete approximately 27 days prior to the election.
    Independent voters who go to the polls on Election Day will be given the option to choose a party ballot at that time.

    • Cornville Community Association request for assistance in the P&Z process in reference to the Spring Creek Ranch proposal. From their president, Bev Jackson, If you could encourage your citizens to write a letter opposing Spring Creek Ranch that would be WONDERFUL.  The developers have been all over Sedona getting signatures on form letters and have almost 200!   Each household can submit one letter.  There are instructions for addressing on our website. As soon as we know when this will be heard by the P&Z Commission, I will also share that date so that anyone who is willing to attend and support our fight against adding 2100 units (4200+ people) on less than 1% of the land occupied by the slightly less than 4000 people currently in our small community.”

    • District 2 Supervisor Tom Thurman wrote to ADOT in support of our quest to improve and reconstruct TI 293 on I-17 at McGuireville. He received the following response from the Division Director of Multimodal Planning, “I am in receipt of your email and have directed our planning team to add this project to our current call for projects. It will be added to the list of projects to be reviewed and evaluated for prioritization in the 2022 project priority list.”
    • 6 candidates for the District 2 Supervisor office. List of questions for candidate responses to help our votes make an informed decision.
    • Thank you letter to Supervisor Tom Thurman for his letter to ADOT on our behalf.
    • Thank you letter to Marlyn Van Keuren for her work in setting up a weekly food share for Beaver Creek.

    Local Closings and Transportation Update 3/30/2020

    Today our governor announced that public and charter school districts would remain closed through the end of the semester. He also announced a statewide Stay-at-Home executive order which will be in effect at least through April 30. Essential services for groceries and medicine are exempt from this. Restaurants may continue to offer take out. Many other services that are transportation related, social or medical service related, infrastructure and/or production related are also exempt. He recommends enjoying the outdoors at a safe social distance from others. This order goes into effect Tuesday at 5 PM.
    This week we are fortunate to still have three local restaurants offering cooked meals for take-out: Robbie’s, 592-9191, El Patio, 592-0340, and Thai Garden, 592-9117. X Marks the Spot still has fresh food available, 567-4225. Our auto services, three gas stations w/minimarts, and Dollar stores remain open. Montezuma Dental is open for emergencies only. Canyon Medical is offering telemed and phone appointments and considering other. Please practice distancing at these venues while helping some of our small businesses stay afloat.
    Yavapai Apache Transit, Cottonwood Area Transit and Beaver Creek Transit are all still running. CAT services are free during the COVID-19 outbreak, YAT is $1.25, and BC Transit is free although donations are gratefully accepted. BC Transit provides rides throughout the Verde Valley for food, medical and banking. Seniors and those with disabilities have priority and we take others as driver availability permits. We p/u prescriptions from area pharmacies, p/u orders from Walmart, and both deliver food bags and drive residents to food banks.
    BCT is driving every Tuesday and Friday late afternoon to the Food Share in Camp Verde with rider pickups starting at 3:30 PM or will gladly p/u and deliver a food bag for those who have no transportation or need to stay home. First come first served, 301-2749. Multiple vehicles can be sent. The free local shuttle runs every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM stopping near the YAT signs. Beaver Creek Transit will also take local residents who need a lift to the nearest YAT stop during the week.
     And how’s the Census going? So far only 25% of Arizona households have completed it. “Everyone can complete the Census at Ten Questions, Ten Minutes. Completely Confidential and 100% Secure.” Although self-response has been extended to August 14, please get it done now. No need to wait.

    • Karin Ward, Beaver Creek School Superintendent, forwards that Suddenlink is offering to provide free Internet services for students for 60 days at locations that it serves. Families can call 1-800-251-7313 to talk to a representative. It should take about 5-7 days to establish the connection.

    Cancelled Monday, 3/23: The Bread of Life Pop Up Food Share is from 9:45 to 10:45 AM at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, 3705 E Beaver Creek Rd, in Rimrock behind the Rimrock Post Office.

    Fire Station locked except for Emergency, Other Closings 3/18/2020

    Please order your reading and listening materials quickly. Closings and postponements are occurring faster than we can post them on the calendar since changes are hourly now. On the Beaver Creek Community Calendar, the known cancellations are in black (our information color) and start with CNX. Other items may also be in the process of being cancelled or rescheduled. Call ahead to make sure if a meeting is still scheduled.
    As of yesterday, the Beaver Creek Public Library is remaining open to individuals, all programs and gatherings are cancelled. The Verde Valley Cleanup (free dumping) will NOT begin tomorrow. It is cancelled at this time. Grace Community Lutheran Church has suspended all Wednesday groups and activities. The National Park Service has closed access to Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot. Only the 1/3-mile loop trail will remain open for use at Montezuma Castle.
    Both Fire Stations have signs on the doors explaining that in order to protect the first responders all doors are locked. However, if you ring the doorbell, they will respond as to an emergency and of course the outside phone rings to 911. The CCFMD Bond Advisory Committee meeting for 3/23 is cancelled.
    Cottonwood Area Transit, Yavapai Apache Transit and Beaver Creek Transit are still running currently.

    Beaver Creek eNews 12/9/2019


    Dear Neighbors
    The creek is rushing and thundering and some crossings are flooded, but mostly we’re just enjoying getting some very needed rain. Please remember to stop and not cross if the roadway is covered with water. That water is much more powerful than it looks, and we all know that folks have lost their lives or their vehicles by inattention to safety during desert rainfall.
    This week we have especially good news. Thanks to the Yavapai Apache Nation, particularly the Transit Division, Beaver Creek and Verde Lakes now have bus routes which connect residents to Camp Verde and on to Cottonwood and Sedona, Monday through Friday. Monday is the first day of operation in the beautiful new bus which hits the McGuireville stop at 7:33 and 8:01 AM that morning. Rides cost $1.25. The driver has schedules to hand out. Look for the bus stop signs throughout our community. On Saturday, Beaver Creek Transit will continue to run the free local shuttle throughout Beaver Creek from 10 AM to 2 PM in a continuous loop for rides to the Dollar stores, Gasmart, BC library, and McGuireville.
    Please note the “Good Things” that continue to happen at Beaver Creek School. This year the school needs increased AZ Tax Credit donations. Up to $200 (single) or up to $400 (married) of your tax liability may be donated to the school and will be refunded to you after filing your AZ tax return. Please consider dropping off a check at the school or going online to  and using PayPal to help students get the extracurricular activities that many benefit from.

    On Monday afternoon there is another Kids of Hope training session (call first to sign up) and the Blue Christmas Service in the evening. Both BCCA and Beaver Creek School have board meetings on Monday. The last three days of Christmas House are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The fund donations are less than last year, but there are more children on the list. If you have items to donate that can be sold, please drop them off or call Rosemary at 300-2640 for pick up.

    Upcoming on Saturday is the annual Beaver Creek Adult Center Potluck and Raffle which is always a wonderful event. On Saturday and Sunday is your last chance to get memorable Santa photos in the photo trailer at Candy’s Creekside Cottage. The following Monday, December 16, is the second community participation meeting for the Primrose Peak Estates which will be held at 6 PM in the BC School Multipurpose Room.

    Monday, 12/9-Kids at Hope Mentor/Training is at BC School from 3 PM to 5 PM. Beaver Creek School is looking for adults in the community who would like to become an Interest-driven, School-based Treasure Hunter / Mentor to our students. If you are willing to commit to Kids at Hope/Mentor Training (about 2 hours) and have about 30 minutes per week for the school year to commit to a student in Beaver Creek School, we would love to Montezuma Chapelchat with you!     Monday, 12/9-The Blue Christmas Service begins at 7 PM in Montezuma Chapel, 3450 E Rusty Spurs Rd. Blue Christmas is a quiet service where participants are guided through scripture, prayer and music and allowed time to be present to and rest from the things that can make this season such a challenge.   All are welcome, the service lasts about an hour. Please contact Scott or Charity Worden at 928-567-5804 for more information.

Christmas gifts and food will be purchased for 47 families with 100+ children from your donations for the merchandise.  More Christmas are needed to sell. These contributions may be made at the Kiwanis Clothes Closet during their open hours: Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat from 10 to 3:00 PM or at the Christmas House. Thank you to the community for their support for this effort and a special thank you to Steve Allgrove for again loaning the use of his building!

    Friday, 12/13-A Christmas Cantata “A Celebration of Carols” will be sung by the Montezuma Chapel Choir directed by Charity Worden starting at 7 PM. There are special narrations, solos, duets and guitars. Refreshments following. Turn up Top O the Morning across from the fire station. Then turn right at the top; the chapel is down a few yards.

The additional meeting is required by the county since the developer requests to build a new entrance opposite Brocket Ranch Rd rather than create an entrance at Bice Rd.

    Tuzigoot National Monument – Clarkdale, AZ
    Free Tavasci Marsh Tours for the Month of December
    At the bottom of the eastern slope of Tuzigoot Pueblo lies the largest desert wetland in Arizona that is not associated with the Colorado River.  For thousands of years, this marsh has served as a watery refuge for its surrounding desert neighbors.  People have had a unique and, at times, unbalanced relationship with the marsh, which is now under federal protection as part of Tuzigoot National Monument.
    Every weekend in the month of December, rangers will be offering guided tours of Tavasci Marsh.  The first tour will be on Saturday, December 7th.  Tours will begin at 10:00am every Saturday and Sunday and will last approximately 2 hours.  Visitors wishing to attend these tours are required to wear closed-toed shoes and bring water.  The tour begins and ends with a steep, rocky grade, so visitors may want to bring hiking poles for balance.  Marsh tours are free, however if visitors wish to visit the museum and pueblo trail, regular admission fees apply.
